Jigra is a film that struggles to find its footing, falling into the trap of prioritizing style over substance. Directed by Vasan Bala, the movie had the potential to be a gripping drama but is ultimately weighed down by a lackluster execution.

At the center of this faltering ship is Alia Bhatt, who portrays Satya, a character meant to evoke vulnerability and strength. Unfortunately, Bhatt’s performance comes off as disingenuous, failing to resonate emotionally. While she attempts to embody the turmoil of her character, it feels more like a surface-level portrayal rather than something deeply nuanced. One can’t help but wonder how much better the film would have fared if someone like Anushka Sharma had taken on the role—she certainly has the chops to have brought Satya to life in a more compelling way.

Vedang Raina delivers a decent performance, though his role doesn’t offer much beyond the standard fare of the genre. The supporting cast, however, does a commendable job, adding depth where the lead actors fall short. The film is technically strong, with crisp editing that keeps the narrative moving, even if the story drags at points. The background score, too, is a highlight, enhancing the atmosphere of many scenes.

But the biggest issue with Jigra is its overly cliche treatment. The film drags, struggling to engage the audience with a plot that feels recycled and predictable. Bala’s direction seems more concerned with creating an aesthetically pleasing film than telling a compelling story. The narrative’s attempts to be socially conscious fall flat as well. The "feminist" themes feel tacked on and unnecessarily preachy, detracting from any genuine messaging the film might have wanted to convey.

The movie closes on a sentimental note, but any emotional impact is undermined by a lack of investment in the characters or story. By the end, Jigra doesn’t offer anything particularly unique or memorable. It’s a film that aims high but, unfortunately, misses the mark.
